'54 F-100 Tips

Hi,
I Just registered at this site, don't know my way around here very well, yet(or any place else on the net,for that matter)...I recently purchased a fairly stock and complete '54 F-100,with original rebuilt six cylinder motor,Ford-o-matic xmission,...just refurbished the original tube radio...It's mostly rust-free and looks like it may be a custom cab(stainless rain-gutter trim, full door panels and visors....It is is missing the speaker cover(mounted on the roof),which I hear is very difficult to find...I'm not sure how far I want to go with restoring this truck, and how stock I want to keep it...It was repainted once,in red instead of the original green...Anybody else here take on a similar project and have any suggestions?

Welcome. You've found your way to the best place on the internet regarding our era trucks. The collective knowledge to be found here would cover correctly nearly everything you'd ever want to know about your truck.

If you choose to restore your machine look up Earl's World in the search function. This is the ongoing tale of one man's search for classic restoration in a world of "girly" engines and classy hotrods. Getting used to using the search function is a good way to explore any topic. Failing to find the answer you want would make a good post.

You'll find a few comedians on this board as well. Some are truly funny. You will also find some of the finest people anywhere. That's no joke.

cordially, himmelberg

Simon,

Just about everybody on this board has taken on a similar project. Mine is a 48 F-3. Welcome to the forum. This is great place to get advise on your truck...some of it may actually be useful...

Welcome. I've got a '53 that I've decided to fix up as stock as I can afford. There's alot of good advice here on FTE. Those radio speaker covers are rare, but usually there is one on ebay every two or three months. They usually fetch alot of money.

Thanks, guys(assuming you're all guys...but then again, some gals like the fat-fenders,too)...I'm not creative or rich enough to go hotrod, and I like the nostalgic feel I get from going original...and the simplicity of the old machines..Under the hood of this old girl doesn't appear any more complex than a tractor motor(which I'm just as clueless about),but it looks like it should be good, clean fun...I'm looking forward to getting to know my truck and this site a little better...

Welcome to FTE. If your truck is complete and in good condition it will make a great stock restoration project. It is very hard to find one in that condition so you have a good start and it is nice to see a stock truck as most are rodded to some extent. As for how to do it that is up to you as you know what you will want to have in the end and what will be the most pleasing to you. Good luck, have fun and enjoy your new classic truck.

Congrats on your find! Yes these trucks are very simple and servicable, one of the reasons for their popularity. Make a few more posts so you can access the search function (I think it's limited before you make 5 or 10 posts?) and check on whatever topics interest you, there's a LARGE amount of info here. Best thing if you have a streetable runner and limited budget is to drive it, repair/update what is needed as you go along. Don't be in a hurry to find the expensive/rare OEM bits until you have checked with the various aftermarket suppliers to see if repros are available. There are enough aftermarket support out there that you could possibly build a complete mid fifties truck without using any old parts.

To put it in perspective, you can build a 56 pickup with all new parts if you wanted to, from frame to cab.
