Convertor Unlock

Should the converter be able to unlock on the interstate at 70 MPH in overdrive? Vehicle in question is a 1996 E-150, 5.0, 4r70w, 3.31 rear. With enough pedal pressure going up a hill, the engine might speed up even though it is still in overdrive. Previous Fords I had with the 4r70w/EAOD didn't do this. Anyone have an idea?

That's normal. If you get far enough into the throttle the torque converter will unlock to give more acceleration.

Another thing to note, I have an aftermarket transmission cooler on this one. It doesn't have the temperature cut out valve so it takes longer for the unit to warm up and therefore, longer to let the converter spend all it's time in lockup.
