Unhappy 375,000 Miles

K so I have finally hit the 375,000 mark in the old beast with no real major thing wrong until now. But I am wanting to give her a new outlook on life. The tranny is questionable and clutch is going out, and the engine is in need of ....something. My question to all is what path to take..
1. Wait till something breaks to fix it?
or
2. Go ahead and start refurbing everything? (If so I have no idea where to start and how to go about it, like remanufactured engine and tranny or if they can be rebuilt etc, etc...)
Any input would be appreciated, I am fairly new to the automotive world and a total tard when it comes to things with four wheels. TIA

Oh by the way it is a 1990 f-150 2WD with the 300-I6...thnx!

Thats really a decision for you to make. But yes, you can have your engine/tranny rebuilt or buy new or prebuilt ones. Replacing is quicker and easier than rebuilding but then you really don't know whats "in there" and you have to trust that the guy who put together your engine/tranny did it right with good parts.

It'll probably be cheaper to buy a new truck than refurb this old one. Is there some sentimental reason not to get something else? Personnaly, I wouldn't go thru the expense unless I was going to go thru the truck from front to rear and make it almost new again. Not only does your engine and tranny have 375K on it, so does the rest of the truck (welds, clips, springs, lines, hoses, bushings, nuts and bolts...) and alot of those parts have seen every bump of those miles.

Also, it would be handy to have something else to drive while the work was in progress. Replacing an engine can be an all week project for us slow-pokes. Rebuilding takes even longer as you would have to send the block out typically to be prepped. Ditto for the heads...

Really the choice is yours

I'm sure the guys over in the inline 6 forum would love to hear your story so I think it would be a good idea to get some input over there too. I just have a few questions like what kind of shape the body/frame is in and I was wondering about your transmission, is it the mazda 5 speed? and if so has it lasted all this time or have you had to repair it?

The tranny is the Mazda 5 speed and oddly enough there have been no major repairs to the tranny itself. only to the clutch assembly. The frame is straight and no major rust anywhere just some dents and dings in the body. Paint is really shot though. HTH
