Hey FTE guys and gals, I finally found the best solution for turning radius improvement. Well, first I did notice a big improvement when I took out the drum brakes front end out of my 74 F250 4x4 and swapped in a 76 Dana 44 front end with disc brakes. That made a huge difference.
More recently, I dropped in the engine I have been working on building, a 68 lincoln 460. I have found that if I dump the clutch and turn the wheel and step into the accellerator moderately, she turns on a dime. The only problem is I get alot of looks from other motorists when making those "on a dime turns". The real expense of the conversion is still being monitored as the cost of tires will probably go up. Another consideration is exhibition of speed laws may come in to play if the motorist giving the looks happens to be a cop.
I was thinking the same thing to correct my turning radius BUT..... Being that I am a cop it would probablly be frowned on. And unfortunatly I get in trouble twice for doing the "exhibition of speed" or "careless driving", once from the courts, the next from my supervisor.
if you ever get the opportunity again, look for a steering box (and associated links) from a 78-79 PS setup. i drove my 77F250 around trying everything to tweek or make improvement to the old 'power-assist' until i got a nice 79F250 with REAL PS and it is a different world. its hard to believe how much difference. good luck.
