My little 302 is an awsome motor but it's getting up there (120k). I am thinking of putting a windsor in place of it. Should I go the junkyard route, or should I consider a crate motor such as Edelbrock? Another problem is that I have the Mazda 5 speed manual tranny and I looked in my Manual and I dont think that ford put manuals in half tons with 351's, just E40ds? Please help! If I had too i could just go with another 302 but I want a little more towing capabiity.
depends on how much ur willing to spend..its not to hard to put a c-6 in place of that mazda thingy so u could easly swap to a 351w, and as for the crate/junkyard, im currently building up a 1990 351w that i got at the yard. id suggest that route cause u get all the accesories etc, and can actualy take it apart and build it up to better then most crate motors for cheaper, and even better u'll have more pride cause u did it your self... but back to the money part..u could stroke that 302 to a 347, but opinions vary on the longevity of that motor,
Not sure what your question is. So if I'm redundant, I apologize.
The 351W will bolt right up to your current 5 speed. However, the manual has always been the weak link regardless of motor (I6-302). In other words, I believe the towing limit is 5K on your 302 and the 300. The 351 will obviously give you more power but the tranny is suspect as far as using that power.
I agree with the above post but "baby" c-6's are a little harder find. The AOD can be built to be as strong as ANYTHING (check Lentech products) and you can get a manual valve body with an electronicically activated OD.
Easy answer: 351w-ZF swap. The ZF 5 speed tranny came behind 351w in the F250 and F350 trucks, and is nearly a bolt-in swap for the Mazda tranny, it is also much stronger than the Mazda tranny.
i agree with loudfords, get a zf tranny you could probably find it mated already to a 5.8 from an f250/350 for a good price. then just use your 5.0 harness and get an ecu for a 5.8/c6 combo and your done. go here www.fordfuelinjection.com this site will give you reference numbers for the correct ecu . besides that your set.
