Considering the HP/Torque/Rev. attributes of the 300 I-6 (+C6 trans), what would be the perfect gear ratio for a truck who runs 33" tires and does some trailer towing (car & camper)?
How much do you drive i on the highway? I'd say something between 3.00 to a 3.55 would do great depending on how much off the line performance you want.
The perfect gearing doesn't exist. Everything is a compromise. In your case the best compromise is probably a 3.27 or 3.55 since you tow. If you rarely drive on the highway a 3.73 would probably be OK. The torque converter is like another gear when it is stalled, so you can run a taller gear than you would with a manual trans. Make sure you have enough trans cooler to keep the temps down.

I would probably say 3.73. My truck used to have 3.55 with C6 and stock tires. With the bigger tires, 3.73 should make the difference between my set up and yours. Maybe 4.10 if you don't do a ton of highway driving.
I dunno though 3.73 or 4.10 are good gears for bigger tires in general but, it's a 3 speed c6....... That would be pulling some mighty hefty rpm's on the highway.
I agree though perfect gears don't exist everything is a comprimise.
I also agree 3.55 or 3.27 sounds even better in my mind for you. Didn't know of a 3.27 gear as an option so i just said 3.00 to a 3.50 lol.
I don't think 3.27 was ever offered in the trucks, but it was available in the Mustang. The aftermarket offers almost any gearing combination you can think of.

Technically, if you have enough gears then you can have the "perfect" ratio. Thats why big trucks have such a great number of gears in their transmissions. However, in the confines of a pickup with a C6 3 speed, you are right. You'll give up acceleration for highway performance, or highway performance for acceleration. A luxury would be a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit and a set of 4.10 gears, making for 6 forward speeds and a reasonable cruise RPM. But that costs alot of money.
i have decided to go with 2.73 gear for daily driving and good fuel econimy overall i really notice that my towing seem sbetter i just use 235 75 15 supersport ht from walmart my fav tire i pulled my boat a 25 footer " damn thing cost more than my house did" up some pretty steep inclines and it seems better than the 3.55 gears i had i have 300 inline efi i also like it cause im not running through my gears so fast and sucking up gas by the way my truck is 2wd and my gears came off a turbo charged thunderchicken they have posi too.
There's also US Gear for gear splitters. They have a 1.25:1 underdrive as well as a .8:1 overdrive. (the Gear Vendors unit is .78:1, I think) Still expensive, though. ($2,300-2,800+) No idea on quality of either unit. I'm the only one I know who's crazy about alternative gearing options.. or just plain crazy.
Oh well, back to lurking.. another two weeks before it nags me to post again.

I am too. I recognize that a greater selection of gears is more flexable. I am not, however, crazy about the prices for the equipment.
Your 2.73 gears would be inferior to 3.55's for towing-the motor is turning less rpm's at a given speed, and delivers less torque multiplication to the wheels. It may be that your 2.73's towed okay, but higher numeric ratios (3.55's, 3.73's)have more capability.
I have 95 4wd and it has 3.55's. I got a good deal on some 3.73's for the rear but I also want a zf tranny so I can get rid of the mazda. I think it's better for me to replace the tranny first and see how much that helps then if I still need the gearing I'll get the front set and everything else to go along with it.
