tranny problems

My tranny shifts fine but when I slow down just a bit or if I am going up a hill, it will not kick down unless I just about hammer the gas to the floor. The engine bogs down like in a manual truck if you leave it in high gear and slow down and then try to drive off. Could this be a problem with the kick down cable or the gas pedal cable or could it be a tranny problem? I changed the fluid and the filter and it hasn't helped.

If it's a four speed auto then it's an AOD and your TV cable needs adjusting properly before you burn the trans up from low pressure.

On an AOD the TV cable that goes from the throttle body to the trans controlls the shift point and also the pressures inside the trans. A cable that isn't adjusted properly will cause low pressures within the trans and therefore cause the clutches to eventually burn.

You can go to autozone.com and click on the link to Vehicle Repair Guides to find the adjustment procedure. Adjust the TV cable first. If that doesn't fix the problem then you can start looking to problems with the governor or valve body

look up the directions for adjusting the shift cable for an AOD or 4R70W whichever you have and follow the directions. http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker...3d800ce35c.jsp

well I THINK I might have done it right, on the cable there is a little metal "slide" type deal and you can take that out and take the cable up or down a notch. I can tell it will down **** a bit quicker but there is still a touch of bogging down. I guess thats just an old truck for ya or maybe its the tranny. I really don't know.

that page says its not found. I don't know what kind of tranny I have. In the truck it says a D with a cirlce around it I don't know if that tells you anything about it being a AOD or not. I wish I could tell you more. I guess what ever tranny comes stock on a 89 ford f 150 larit 4x4.

PS. maybe I should change my major to automotive something or other, rather then civil engineering. LOL

For an AOD

AOD Transmission With Fuel Injection

ADJUSTMENT WITH ENGINE OFF
  1. Set the parking brake and put the selector lever in Neutral.
  2. Remove the protective cover from the cable.
  3. Make sure that the throttle lever is at the idle stop. If it isn't, check for binding or interference. NEVER ATTEMPT TO ADJUST THE IDLE STOP!
  4. Make sure that the cable is free of sharp bends or is not rubbing on anything throughout its entire length.
  5. Lubricate the TV lever ball stud with chassis lube.
  6. Unlock the locking tab at the throttle body by prying with a small screwdriver.
  7. Install a spring on the TV control lever, to hold it in the rearmost travel position. The spring must exert at least 10 lbs. of force on the lever.
  8. Rotate the transmission outer TV lever 10-30° and slowly allow it to return.
  9. Push down on the locking tab until flush.
  10. Remove the retaining spring from the lever.

hmm, I didn't understand steps 3, 5, and 7.

I don't see a ball stud, also I don't understand why you install a spring. I just put the truck in N, and adjusted the tv cable to the very last slot before the engine started to rev higher. I did twist the cable like it said, I don't know why I guess to get some kinks out. I made sure the cable wasn't in contact with anything or had any sharp bends. It still bogs down but not as much. I hope its nothing seriouse. I called a guy at a tranny shop and he said that it sounded like wha tyou have been saying. so i am guessing you all are correct but I don't understand why its still doing it a bit.
