Hey, ive got a 250 5.8L manual and after running it for a while I get, not massive, but substantial amounts of smoke coming from under the hood. I think im burning oil and that I may have a leaky gasket at the back. If anyone knows if there are other things I can look for that would be awesome.
If you're burning oil, you'd see it coming out of the exhaust. Sounds like you have a leak. could be valve cover gaskets, or you mentioned from the back. Could be lower intake manifold, or even a rear main seal. Any leak running down onto the exhaust would cause lot's of smoke from under the hood.
I gather all the smoke is from under the hood. Most likely that is caused by leaking Valve cover gaskets as Egor said. I think he misinterpretted you 'back' as in back of the truck which would mean an engine problem, where I think you meant the back of the engine...
Yes, the smoke is from under the hood near the back of the engine. Can someone point me in the direction of the main seal so I can check that out and mabye point out how much work it is to get at if any. Also I was wondering how long it would take a first timer to get at the gaskets to check them and the lower intake manifold as well.
In order for it to smoke like that it would have to be landing on the exhaust. Find the spot where it hit the exhaust and folloe it back to it's source. Remember that it may not drop straight down. It could leak onto one spot and run down and then drip onto the heat source. Do your search when the engines cold because you may have to stick your arm up qutie a ways to actually follow the trail. Good luck.
