Sorry, its push button. I had it on a rack today all four wheels turned but it doesnt seem to have any power. The push button light will come on sometimes but not all the time. when it does you can here it. I checked all the vac lines and elec connections they seem to be ok.
There is a t-case shift module, electric shift motor, and if you still have auto locking hubs they could also be a issue.
If the light don't come on (and the bulb is OK) it is not going into 4HI. You should be able to hear the shift motor shifting, and then BOTH dash lights should come on....there is one by the switch and one to the left and down from the switch on the dash.
If you hear the motor and the lights are lit......but the front wheels are not turning chances are its your hubs.
If the lights don't light up chances are its the shift motor itself......you can try tapping on it with a hammer while someone pushes the button and it should go in......also take off the connector and clean it out. The motor could also be totally shot, but then I dont think you would get the intermitent operation......the replacment motor is only like $100 from JBG. I keep one on the shelf at all times.
If it aint that then you can check the shift module.....it has a self test procedure.....I can help you out with that also.
I'll only add that if it were the transfercase itself...the internals...it would be making a lot of noise...so it's probably your hubs if everything is engaging.
