1974 4x4 to 2x2
Hello, I have a 1974 F-100 Ranger and I would like to convert the 4 wheel
drive to 2 wheel rear drive I cant afford the gas (360 c.i.) also transfercase
is not engaging I want to drop the T-case ,but I dont know if I can still
use my same transmission (c6) I know I have to do some modification
to the rear drive train and transmisson housing but I dont know what!
Any help would be geatly apriiciated, Thanks Jack

have you considered selling your truck and getting a 2WD? i'm sure there are many 2WD owners who would rather have a 4X4, myself included, who would gladly trade you. of course, your truck would have to be as nice as mine...
but to answer your question, you should be able to get another output shaft and housing from a 2WD C-6 and do the swap. i could be mistaken, in which case you just get another C-6 and bolt it in. also, get the driveshaft out of a 2WD truck. that's all you have to do.

I dont think you would benefit from removing the transfercase if your still pushing the weight of the front axle. If you remove the transfercase, the transmission will have to go too (i think, unless you can get the output shaft and housing like Savage066 said) Then you also would have to get a longer driveshaft. In the end, you still wont improve gas mileage. you would have spent more in finding parts to complete a 2wd drivetrain. Its not the 4wd thats killing you, its the 360. The benefit of swapping in any other engine in hopes to increase gas mileage would be negated by the cost of purchasing all the parts to complete the swap. I'ts a loose-loose situation. If you honestly cant afford the gas drive your F100, its time you asked yourself how important that truck is to you.
If money is really tight, sell the the truck and get your self a cheap little compact car with a 4 cylinder.
Gas here is $2.89 - 91oct and im about to finish my 73 restoration-mod, but now im afraid I wont be able to drive it and enjoy it as much as I had hoped. :P

I have a 390 with less then 500 miles on it in my highboy. The transfercase is out of my truck (divorced transfercase so I can run a 4x2 driveshaft) and I'm running two wheel drive right now. You are NOT going to notice the difference. If you want milage try doing a really detailed tune up. Not a half fast tune up.
