intake suckin oil?

Have between 500 and 1000 miles on the build and still get some blue smoke out the tailpipe, especially if I punch it after it has been winding down or after a steady cruise. Through one of Rusty's posts found that some had had an intake leak on the crankcase side of the gasket. Any way to diagnose this for sure before taking it off?

Just a thought....I noticed you have roller rockers so I asume you have aftermarket valve covers. Do they have a baffle under the pcv valve? I bought a set of tall Holleys that didn't and the pcv valve sucked oil right down the carb. You probably knew that but I thought I'd ask.

I was getting a couple oil fouled plugs. I fixed it though. What I did was, I went and got some washers for the intake bolts, then I torqued 'em, in sequence, to Ford's spec. Edelbrock recommends 25 ft-lbs, while Ford recommends 35. I torqued 'em to 35 and the oil fouling went away.

Wind it up to 4000 or so RPM in 1st (or 2nd on a 435NP), let off, let it go down to 1000RPM, and then hit it again.

If you get a big POOF, I'd bet dollars for donuts that it's the intake gasket. Been there, done that... put on an Edel intake with stock bolts and they were too long. Had to use different bolts.

Make sure your PCV valve is good, and make sure the valve covers aren't filling up with oil... if they are, you can suck oil up through the PCV valve.

Yeah, I had to cut 4 of my stock bolts down to fit. Hacksaw and bench grinder, good as new!

Do you guys use the RTV under the intake manifold bolts? I know it cured my oil blowing/leaking out onto the manifold.

I didn't. What I did, was I took one of the bolts to the hardware store, and found some washers (wish I remembered the size) that fit real snug on the bolt. They were non-hardened, meant for wood and general applications, fender washers I think. I put one under each bolt, and tightened 'em down to Ford's 35 ft-lbs spec. No leaks.

I found what one of my problems was, and that was a collector gasket that just wont seal. It's one of those aluminum ones. My plan is to ignore it, already tried tightening. It doesn't sound exactly like a ping, more like... and exhaust leak! But yes, the tightening did stop the oil consumption and pinging. Amazing how that works.

Oil getting sucked into the intake can cause pinging. I'd suspect if you take care of the oil problem, the pinging go away in short order.
