I have an '89 f-150/5.0. The a/c hasn't been very cool and the other day it quit working. I know the freon was low and the main hose assy with the high & low sides together was obviously leaking. I replaced the hose assy and decided to convert it to the r-134a freon. After putting 2 1/2 cans of freon in the low side I thought the compressor would have kicked on but it wont. I've tried jumpng it directly from the battery with no results. When it first quit working the compressor just turned off, i'm assuming via the low pressure cutoff switch, with no abnormal noises. Why is the compressor not switching on? Is it possible that the clutch has gone bad? Any input would be greatly appreciated- especially by my wife. Thanks in advance.

one thing to mention..im not a profesional or claim to be :P
when you switch over to r134 it is always a good idea to replace the reciever/dryer and the orifice tube...
having done this to ensure that your clutch does work you can do this...find the pressure switch coming off the reciever/dryer (should be the only set of wires on the darn thing) jumper it (ie close the circuit) having doen this the compressor should kick on
if it does your pressure swithc may be bad or not enough pressure...if not then your clutch maybe bad
If it doesn't run after jumping low pressure switch get a test light. Check for power at the low pressure switch. Should light both terminals (engine running a/c on). No light, trace power loss back towards a/c controls inside. Light on both terminals, check for power at the compressor harness. Power on one wire only replace coil, power on both wires find open in ground circut.
