even though i love my aeorstar, there is just something about it, i have to remind myself who built it, Ford, cheep cheep cheep, fix or replace daily and thats what it has been. they only build it to make it through the warranty and the first owner. they really dont care after that. if ya want more than that ya haveta look at the rice burners. thats my 2cents.
My 90 Eddie Bauer has 254000 miles on it, other than normal wear and tear (i.e. tires, batteries, etc.) this car has had three water pumps (should only have been two, but I got screwed by the dealer who put in a rebuild instead of the new he charged me for) and a steering rack. Ooooops, just thought about something....I'm the first owner, so its not going to go in the tank until I get rid of it......lol
A car is only as good as the person taking care of it.
If you treat it ruff or ignore the little problems that arise without fixing them, then yes any brand or model of car will become crap.
So if the car you buy wasn't taken care of by the previous owner...............
cookkd, i think you were lucky as most aero's go through allot of problems to keep them going. look at all the posts on this forum. if they were such a trouble free van you would not see half as many posts that you see here.
take care
The thing you also have to consider is that most of the vehicles discussed here are very high mileage 'Stars. Sure there are exceptions, every car line has its lemons, but as a whole this is one fine vehicle.
lasher, I just wonder what are those problems that most of A-stars go thru? And which one is trouble free van?

Well when we had are 1990 Aerostar 3 cyl it gave us oil problems. And rust problems lol. Then when we got are 1993 Aerostar 4 cyl. We had tranny problems going up to whyoming going up to the mountains. Because the mechanic cut part of our transmission oil dip stick off. Also are other Aerostar the 1990 gave us problems up in the mountain in South Dakota. And now we got a 1995 Aerostar no problems since just a little body damage. fordguy101
Well...I just spent 20 minutes typing up how nice and reliable my '91 is despite my teenage driving style (fourwheeling, burnouts, donuts, ect...). Mom got on the phone and kicked me off line (wireless)
But the Aerostar is the most reliable damn "truck" I know of
I'm happy with mine, even though I have had this nagging problem with the temp sensor that I can't locate. My 94 has 186,000 miles, and has had 3 repairs (clock spring, water pump, and the diff housing cracked - mechanic says it was a fluke). My 92 has 135,000 miles and has had two repairs (water pump and then had to have the head milled because of overheating issues - previous owner was an idiot). All in all, they're the most troublefree vehicles I have owned. My 16-year-old daughter drove me by a place that had an Aerostar for sale. . .and suggested I should buy it for myself and give her mine!

Do you mean 3.0 and 4.0 liter engines? (RE: 3 cyl & 4 cyl)
Ford stopped putting a 4 cyl in the Aero in '87 and the 3 cyl must have been a transplant from a Suzuki.........

What can't you locate....the ECT sensor or the problem??? If it's the sensor, on the 3.0 its front and center on the top about where the heater hoses are attached.......4.0 top of engine LH side just ahead of the ignition coil.....

I finally found the thing. . .seems there are two temp sensors and was looking at the one for the gauge. This one seems to be different for the computer. Copper was kind enough to guide me through it. You guys are going to make a good mechanic out of me yet! Thanks!

I agree with all of the above. One owner before me an old couple took care of it fairly well.Cut a few corners but basicly except for a few repairs nothing major yet..While its nice to have no car payments I question its value in the long run.She is 15 years old
and parts are getting hardto come by.But I do notice alot of aero's running around.
