Castrol Syntec

Except for the 3 diesels I have owned, I have always swore by Castrol GTX for my other vehicles. Today I was at NAPA to order a 6637 air filter when the Castrol Syntec 15-50 caught my eye. I have been thinking of going to a full synthetic next oil change and am undecided about brand. Any Pros and Cons on the Castrol Syntec (other than price which is over 4 bucks a bottle)?

Thanks,

Chips2000

I too have always been a Castrol GTX man so when walmart quit carrying Ford oil I switched to Castrol Heavy Duty and it has stayed in the truck much better that the ford oil. I have a 99 with over 150k miles and it did not use more than 1/2 a quart of Castrol in 3500 miles with 2000 of those miles towing a 12k pound 5th wheel to Key West. The syntec would probably be great but I am staying with the Heavyduty and keep my change interval at 3-4k miles. If you switch report back later and let us know how it does.

Inmilner, my truck is also a 99 and it has 129,000 miles. I am just starting to pull a 9000 lb trailer with the first out of town trip last weekend. I do not plan on extending the oil changes past 7500 miles. What is the difference in using a multi-grade as opposed to a single grade in high mileage engines. My PSD uses very little oil between my normal 3-4000 miles changes, but I have not pulled anything more than a boat a couple of miles to lake. However, I do a lot of stop and go and shutdown and go driving every day.

Thanks,

I don't think that Castol Syntec is diesel rated. The oil must be CG-4 minimum. If it's only SL rated, that's gas engine only!

thats the first thing i thought as well. i used syntec in both my taurus SHO and my Bronco and was happy. if you want to syn for diesel, Mobil 1 Delvac or Mobil 1 truck and suv (the later can be purchased at wal mart). i have heard good things about the rotella syn but have no experience with it. i use mobil 1.

The Castrol oil that I use is Castrol RX for diesels not the Heavyduty as I first stated
