Steering Shaft

There is a rubber boot on the steering shaft. In my case I should say there was a rubber boot there. It looks like at one time it was attached to the shaft at both ends but it is now in 3 pieces and slides freely up and down the shaft. It has deteriorated badly. I believe it must have been there to keep the elements out, same as the boots on a CV joint, but I haven't looked at a properly installed/functioning one yet to be sure. It looks like a fairly complex job to replace it. My question, I know that CV joints can go south pretty quickly once their boots are damaged or off. Am I getting myself into grief if I just leave the boot off the steering shaft and if so what kind? Thanks in advance, Marty.

I would pull it out, clean it up, lightly grease it, and put a new boot on it. One bolt under clipon plastic cover at gearbox. Unclip the plastic cover and you will see it. May need to turn wheels to get bolt at a position that you can get at. Then have steering wheel unlocked to proceed, so steering isn't bound up. Bolt at other end is under dash. If you have tilt wheel, that bolt is easy to see behind brake pedal. Then pull shaft out through firewall from underhood side. Keep wheel shaft and gearbox in the same place, so when you put the shaft back in, they reconnect just as they were before you started.
