Please help with 04 Explorer problem
My 04 XLT occasionaly makes a strange noise when when backing out of a parking space or driveway. It sounds like it's trying to go into four wheel drive. It only lasts for a second or two and then it's fine. I don't want to go to the dealer without more information. I'd appreciate any help.
I had the transmission fix done, so I know it's not that.

I saw an earlier post that stated that if you were backing up from a stop and it made a noise like 4X4 that the clutch packs were going bad in the rear-end. Do a search on your troubles and make sure that I am telling you right. I have an '04 Limited 4.6, Auto, 4X4 with 3.73 gears and 10,000 miles, I remember the post but I don't remember who posted it. How many miles and other info about yours? Hope this helps! I just looked it up and the post was by "E250guy" and the post was " '02 explorer questions ". Look on page 2 of the posts.

My 05 EB with the 4.6 and 3:73 makes a quick maybe one second noise going forward when the vehicle is cold, does not happen when it's warm, and it sounds like it's coming from the front end I can't even really describe it because it happens so fast sounds kinda like a tire rubbing the curb but can't figure it out, I guess this will be my first trip to the dealer.
