I had a valve job on my 1990 460 and didn't log where the studs vs. bolt go! Is anyone out here that could help me? This engine is EFI!
I have been to Ford and their pictures don't explain where they go either!
I have installed this engine in my 1988 F-150 Shorty 4X2, it took a little work, to move the motor mounts and relocate the transmission mount, but the engine is in.
Install the studs on your manifold holes that are verticle (vs the angled or diagonal holes). There should be 6 if I remember right, 1 at each end of the head and one in the center of each head. If you installed the studs on the diagonal holes you wouldn't be able to get the intake on. Does this make sense? So just put the studs in the holes that will have them upright and slide the intake on. All the holes that are left will be angled 45* or so.

tell me, If I were to use studs in all places going straight up, would that work, as I am going to relace the bolts/studs with new ones if I can find them! this is a stock manifold, some day I will probably replace it with a newer polished one that is more effective!
Yes, you can use studs in any of the holes that are straight up. I bought a set of studs off ebay for $12. I believe there were 6 studs total. The seller doesn't seem to have any up right at the moment but they're listed frequently. You can also go to any specialty fastener shop and buy them.
