I've got an '83 F150 4X4 300 with the 4spd manual tranny. It needs a complete new exhaust system. I planning on nixing the cat and running a header back to a cheapy turbo muffler. Can anyone recommend a header? I see that Hedman makes one but specify it for 2wd only. Where is the interference problem on the 4x4 models? I know clifford sells one, but that a little pricy for this truck. Any others?
Hey Sven...
You might want to try the factory exhaust from a late model FI, they are stainless steel, and dual capable, 2.25 inch as I remember,...This may be an affordable option. Also if you have to cap any Emmsion stuff you can use standard pipe fittings.
No sense in adding a header if your going to run it through a cheap muffler. Cheap mufflers usually flow poorly. Get a good muffler and go up to a 3" (or 4") exhaust first.
You can get a aftermarket Cat for ~$100 from Summit mail order(or other) so I don't think it's worth your while to get rid of it.
The key word is cheap. I don't want an exhaust system that's worth more than the rest of the truck. This isn't a performance oriented move. I just want to get rid of all the rusted out pipes and start new. Frankenstein, I'll check into the newer Ford unit, thanks. The cat is not an issue. A straight pipe is $10. No emmisions test around here, either.
