When restoring a frame is it better to sandblast or wire brush the frame? Does it make any difference? What are some key things to look for in a frame? Once it is cleaned up what are the next steps?
I guess it depends on how good of a job you want. I didn't want show, so I brushed it and then brush painted on rustoleum. If you are trying to show it, blasting and powdercoating it is a good one.
A problem I've had with wire brushing is that it can leave behind a rust scale, or a thin "plate" of rust on the metal. The wire brushing just polishes it up making it look like you are down to the base metal when in fact you are just cleaning the surface of a layer of rust. I've resorted to using a chipping hammer in spots to remove this scale then brushing to achieve a final clean coat. If you have a compressor you can get a needle gun which does a good job of removing rust, it's a bit noisy though I'm afraid. Once clean prep and paint as needed.
Yeah, but I guess that depends on where you are from. I used a desert frame, and it still had factory paint on it in spots, so the scale you are talking about wasn't an issue. Now, where I grew up, that stuff is tough to get thru. I used a welding slag hammer to bust it up, and have seen people use ball peen hammers too.
