dana 60 front identification

how can u tell if ur front differential is a dana 60 . on my 78 ranger f250 the front and rear differential hubs are about the same size. I can just get my two hands around the hubs with my thumbs and middle fingers touching

Eight lug rims, lockout hub 4 inches in diameter, w/ ten bolt cover. My quick math tells me that's a 12.5 inch hub circumference, so maybe. I don't know how your hands are calibrated.

Often, but not always, there will be a 60 stamped in the diff cover near the bottom of the ring gear bump. To find out for certain, find the bill of materials number on the axle tube - it's usually on the front of the tube a few inches to the right of the chunk (long side). You may have to wire brush away some mud or rust to find it. It will have a 61-xxxx, which you can cross reference on Dana's site for all the exact info on your particular axle.

Good Luck!

The easiest way to tell if it is a dana 60 front is by the differential cover bolt size. A dana 60 diff cover will take a 9/16'' wrench and a dana 44 will take a 1/2'' wrench.

Also, a D60 will have 4 bolts on the kingpin caps in a rectangle pattern. The D44 has 3 bolts in a curved pattern. So just look at the bolts holding your steering arm in place and that will tell you.
