Total Recall

These last few days thinking about what has transpired lately has caused me to have total recall of past events some dating back to when I was a child of about 4.

This has been a really weird experience remembering tastes, smells, physical actions, voice recognition all of this in my mind.

Some examples :

1) The smell of pancakes cooking on a griddle every Sunday Morning.
2) The smell of gearcase oil draining out the hole on my old 52 Austin
3) Walking home for school anytime of year and remembering the route I took and once home reaching for the latch for the gate, having to go in through the milk chute because Mom wasn't home & I didn't have my key.
4) Shovelling snow on days when it was a huge dump and remembering how I had to clean out special areas.
5) The smell of Spudnuts (Doughnuts) from 1962
6) The smell of a certain room in the house
7) How I mowed the lawn.
8) The exact feeling I got from doing certain things (catching that long pass of the football), Hitting a home run in organized Baseball
9) The pitch of a certain whistle
10) The smell of Brylcream
11 ) The scent of sea air while sailing across the Atlantic in 1955

This list can go on & on but I don't have the time to extend it.

It has been said that just before someone dies, their whole life flashes before their eyes

Has this happened to anyone else on FTE that say 45 plus years ?

If you're in your teens or 20 something,it isn't the same..... sorry

Mil1ion, don't do this your getting too scary. My day passed away when he was 80 and was sharp as a whip. One month before he wrote down 47 names of people that worked with him when he started in the post office back in 1940. He got every name correct and their addresses as we checked records. He made notes of all his lifetime events. Please no more of this, we want you around to pick on. May I ask how old you are? Last May I ran across a BMW member who is 92 who road down to central Calif fron Portland Oregon.

I actually enjoy reminiscing back when I was young. I do remember all of the senses. I guess maybe those times were carefree and we yearn for those days. Life was fun; now it's a bit%#.

And Mil1ion, #10 the smell of brylcream. I can smell it now. I remember putting on a bunch of Brylcream and then it rained. Looked like someone dumped a gallon of milk on my head. I'm laughing now.

I don't think this is a persons' life flashing in front of them. Maybe it's just a way for the brain to take 5.

From time to time, I get memories brought back to me from various things around me. I have very clear memories of events back as far as three years of age.... possibly earlier... but three is the age of a number of events that were very memorable. There's hardly a day goes by without the pleasure ..or sometimes embarassment .. of remembering my days gone by. Yes .. the sights, sounds, smells ... they are all there .. not always as sharp as when first experienced, but they are there.

They say the sense of smell is linked most to memory. Just .02 of almost worthless info.

At certain times, I can smell the flowers in my G-Mother's Flower Shop. It was in her house. Amazing smell. . . year round.

I remember Sputnik and the paranoia associated with it.
Alan Shepard's flight
Gus Grissom's flight and the loss of his capsule. (Sidenote: I was fortunate enough to see his 'recovered' capsule at Cape Canaveral a couple of years ago. Talk about flashback!!!)
John Glen's flight
Freshly cut grass.
My Dad's Mom (my G-mother) cooking Sunday dinner on/in a wood-burning stove, on her farm. I can smell her apple pie as I write this.
Fried Chicken was normally reserved for Sunday dinners.
The smoke-house. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Heaven on Earth.

Mil1ion. . . Now you've 'done it.' I'm getting hungry!!!

Dad's Old Spice. Still my favorite after shave. Aqua Velva, too.
My uncle's Brute. It was like he bathed in it. Peeeee-Yuuuuuu. Too strong.

Nitro-methane & tire smoke. . . .greatest smell.

And yes, Brylcream. . . a little dab'll do ya!

Geezin' again. . . . .

My dad was in a nursing home for seven years before he passed away. I used to go visit him every Sunday. The nursing home had a very distinct smell to it, by that I mean besides the smell of urine which is common to those places. I think the smell was whatever they used for the laundry because that's the way his cloths smelled. Not really a bad odor just very recognizable. Anyway, I started smelling it at home and I asked my wife if she changed any of her laundry products because I don't want to smell that odor. She said she hasen't changed anything and she can't smell it. BTW, I have a bad sense of smell. I can't smell it on the laundry but I do still smell it sometimes... ???

The #1 one thing that I don't like with this recall is the anxiety in remembering the spankings my Dad gave me.

He was/is a strong man.,
One swat from him & I ended up 3 times zones away

I could pretty well out-run my Mum

Funny - I remember a hand-pumped well at my Gandparents farm, always have.
-But my relatives told me I was only one year old at that point in my life...

There are a few memories from even earlier.
