I have an 86 f250 hd with the big dana rear. I believe it is the dana 60 but not sure. anyway when driving on the highway it does not want to go over 55-60. Oncei hit 60 the truck feels likeit wantsto implode on itself. front end shakes rpms are high just doesnt feel good. tranny is auotmatics also. how can i improve how it feels driving and maybe get a higher top end spped since i do a lot of highway driving. i know the front ends in these trucks has a the built in trait of high speed wable or soi heard but damn if it isnt anoying
Another option is to install an aftermarket overdrive. The big fords have plenty of room between the transmission and rearend, and the overdrive, when disengaged, allows your truck to accellerate just as if it wasn't there. Gear Vendors makes a great unit, but others are available. Search Google for more ideas.
You rear end should be a stereling (for a quick check, if it has a plug in the cover its a dana, if not its a sterling). My guess it that you have 4.10's, now a switch to 3.50's is the cheapest (like a 150 bucks, and this is a complete axle, as gears will be a much bigger PITA).method, but the gear vendors overdrive unit is that best way to go in terms of economy, performance and such.
cheap/dirty way- replace your 31s with 33 and you will be turning 2550 @ 60mph instead of 2750. or goto 35s and you'll be down to almost 2400rpms @ 60mph.
