fuel gauge problem

My 88 f150 l6 front fuel tank is giving me problems. The gauge will register full until all but 4 gallons remain, then wobble and drop to the correct level, almost empty. Any ideas as to the problem and solution? PS--rear tank is registering correctly.

Dakota- Sounds like a sending unit. I just replaced the front tank on my 83 F150 and the gauge was doing the same thing you described. I don't recall what it cost as I sent the wife on the parts run, but it wasn't much in comparison to the $100+ for a new aftermarket fuel tank. You have to drop the tank to replace it, and the bolts holding the straps can be a bear. I soaked with PB blaster and wire brushed them repeatedly, combined with some patience they were much easier to get off. Turns out my straps were rusted too so I replaced tham while I was under there.
I think if the gauge was your problem it would be acting the same on both tanks

fuel gauge problem

The easiest way to check fuel guage problems is to remove hot wire going to sending unit and touch it to ground and watch guage it will bury the needle to full or empty that means its fine.In your case it does sound like sending unit and ive found its easier to take the bed off if your friends are there to help. Good luck windsor
