I just got my Autozone 1bbl carburater put on my truck. (it ran me $139.99) WOW! What a differance that made! That accounted for about a good 85% of my problems. Besides the other problems, that I listed on my previous posts, I did find a new one that REALLY contributed to the roughness of my engine. My rocker nuts were so worn out, that right after we'd get done tightening them, they would start to back out. I would have it idling beautifully, then the bolts would slowly back out, and make it run rough again. So for 15 bucks, I got a new set. There is still a little problem... It will idle decently, but you can hear it miss. I've checked the timing, and it's right on. There are no vaccum leaks. I just put a new pick up in my distributor. I replaced my cap, wires, and rotor, and all plugs. I DID hack off the exhaust system up to the manifold. Could it just not have enough back pressure??? I'm going to get a new system put on tomorrow regardless, so it'll pass the inspection. I personally think that we tightened a lifter down too much, but my father thinks it's fine the way they are. They're all set at exactly 20 lbs. The manual says 20-2? (I forgot) What do you guys think?
Thanks for any and all help!
ALMOST THERE!

Ps. I almost forgot to say, from 2000RPM's and anything above, it runs beautifully! It's really smooth, and sounds great with the exhaust running straight out of the manifold. When I get below that, it's a different story. It starts to idle kinda rough, and does so until it's revved.
LAST EDITED ON 13-Jul-00 AT 12:03 PM (EST)[p]Mine does the same thing, and I have it narrowed down to valves or fire problems now, I was thinking carb, but I have had 3 different ones on my truck. Backpressure doesn't seem to have anything to do with it, it has me stumped.

I would think your miss is electronic and could still be traced to the ignition. Check the coil, wires leading to and from the coil, check the resistance of your new wires, ignition module, coil wire, plug wire not seated, spark leak, plug gapped incorrectly, vacuum advance...
Maybe you should also check your EGR valve to make sure it isn't sticking open a bit letting exhaust gases into the intake at idle. I am not sure exactly when it should start to open, but it shouldn't be open at idle.
