On my 1976 F-250, the VIN number is only 11 characters long. When I had a police check done on this vehicle, since I bought it out of state, the officer told me that there weren't enough characters in it for a standard VIN number. He passed it, though, since it matched the title. I tried to use the ford truck data lookup service that was mentioned in another post and it wanted a 17 character VIN number, in a number/letter format that was nothing like mine. Is there some other site that looks up older trucks? It would be interesting to see the original build data, etc. Thanks for the help -- Brian
There was a thread on this previosly. Mil1ion has a page that decodes all the codes on your door plate. Before the 1983 MY, manufacturers used a shorter code for VIN #'s than the current 17 digits. If you have an LMC catalog lying around, it has a section for identifying VIN #s for trucks.
