a/c compressor
i recently had my clutch switch replaced for my a/c. while i was there the mechanic told me that "the suction side of my compressor was weak and might die soon". he said that he could tell by the way it sounded or something. that did not make any sense to me. can someone explain this? or am i getting taken for a ride? thanks.

Well , Its hard to go by sound unless the compressor was / is making some unusual noises . The only way to really tell whats going on with the compressor / A/c operation is to check both the high & low side pressures . How does it cool ? Its possible the orifice tube is dirty ? Any leaks in the system ? Normally Ford truck R12 systems cool very well , not uncommon to have 40 to 50 deg F at the vents even on very warm days . I wouldnt worry about it unless you notice a cooling deficiency .

The only way to properly check the compressor is to have the guages installed both on the high side and low side. on a warm day your low side reading should be around 40 pounds with the high side around 225 to 250. any higher is a problem, but to check if the presures are high, cool the condensor a little using a water mist, if it lowers it is normal, when at idel, the presure will go up slightly, as it is not getting sufficent are to cool the condesor/high side. when you take the rmps up to around 2500 the low side should drop to around 30 to 35.
