Last night I jumped in the 05 F250 to run to the store, and noticed the dome light didnt come on, strange I thought, but figured that someone left the door half shut and it just turned itself off, I figured once she started the light would come on. Nope. Tried the manual switch and nothing happened. The two map lights still work, but the center dome light doesnt. Neither does the cargo light in the bed. I tried both doors and fiddled with the switch with no results. I couldnt even find a fuse in the manual for this. Just wondering if there is a fuse, or if it is all controlled by some big module. Just trying to save myself a trip to the dealer if at all possible, thanks.
It sounds to me like a fuse would be worth checking. Have you had anything big plugged into your cigarette lighter? It might be on the same circuit as the dome light. Does your cigarette lighter work? I don't know if there is anything else on the dome light circuit besides the cargo light, but it sounds like a fuse problem to me. I would check that first.
If the '04 and '05 fuse boxes are the same the fuse for the domelight would be fuse #35. This is the same fuse that half of the instrument cluster gauges are on. In the '04's it is a 10amp mini-blade fuse.
I havent actually checked the bulbs, which I need to do. But the thought of 2 bulbs (cargo lamp and dome lamp) going bad at once, and not blowing the fuse boggles me. I did just check fuse 35, and it was fine. It seems that everything else works fine, except these 2 lamps.
Here's a silly question. You didn't by chance turn down your instrument cluster lights to the point that you turned off your domelights, did you? If in fact you can turn them off. On the '04's your suppose to be able to turn the domelights off by turning the little wheel that dims the instrument cluster lights down until it clicks, but I've tried and I can't turn the domelights off. Maybe mine's just broke.
I had every tail light on a truck out once and didnt think to look at the bulbs until my father said "well you better elimnate the easy first". Turns out it was the bulbs burned out! What are the odds of that. The only guess I had was the car wash put cold water on hot bulbs and they popped.

I fiddled with the switch for a good couple minutes, and got no change in the situation, Im starting to think it is a relay or something in a module somewhere. I will check the bulbs to rule that out, then its off to the dealer. Good old warranty
i posted about the same problem with my 2000 f-359 here a couple of weeks. i did find the fuse it was blwon. when i replaced it it stayed on for a couple of days, then blew again. replaced that one and it blew as soon as i stuck the fuse it it. wish i had some idea where to start looking. i have removed all the bulbs and it still blew a fuse.................dawg
Yard Dawg- Your problem sounds like a wire is grounding-out. If anything was installed just before the problem started, start there and see if the domelight wire (I believe the wire is Black w/ a lt. blue stripe) got pinched, a screw through it, or something was hooked-up to the domelight circuit that is drawing too much power and blowing the fuse (alarm, powered step bars, etc.) If that's not it I suggest checking the domelight wire starting underneath the scuff plates. See if it's been pinched or a screw has gone through it. Then just try and follow the wire and see if it's pinched or cut anywhere else.
Checked my scuff plate on the driver side, and sure enough as soon as I pulled it up I heard the relay click and the light came on. I pulled it out, but didnt see any wires pinched. Slapped it back together and its working like a champ. Thanks for the suggestion.
when i bought my truck it was used. it does have an aftermarket alarm system on it. did not ask the previous owner if the light was going out after the install of the alarm. but i will try and look and see if i see any thing that might have caused this......thanks for the info........................dawg
Pardon my ignorance but define "scuff plate". It will probably be something I shoulda known but call me ignert!
The scuff plate is the piece of plastic that sits at the bottom of the door opening seperating the inside from the outside of the vehicle. You probably step on it each time you get in and out of your truck.
Yard Dawg- Has that fuse always been blowing? Or did it just start recently?
Texascadillac42- Glad you got it fixed, but that's just weird that it was doing that.
