Air Conditioning Problem

I have a 2003 Excursion Eddie Bauer with a 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel Engine. The air conditioning keeps going out. It has happened many times and we've taken it in to the Ford dealership for service and they have run test after test. They eventually replaced the circuit board and it still goes out every now and then. We called again to let them know and they don't seem to know what to do. What do I do about this problem? Has this happened to anybody here before? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I forgot to add that when the air conditioning goes out, the light display goes black and it does not blow any air whatsoever. No fan. No air. Nothing. It doesn't come back on while the engine is running, but after the engine has been turned off for awhile, the air will come back on occasionally.

Are you talking about the automatic climate control screen that goes out? If so, mine does too and can't figure out why. My AC goes out because the system keeps springing leaks. I know this doesn't help, but you are not the only one with these problems.

This very same problem just happened to me (3rd time in 18 months) Friday. Every time, it re-starts on its own if you turn the truck OFF for at least 5 minutes. Seems like Microsoft has now invaded our truck(s) computers.

I have a theory that it has something to do with the accessories power. The 5 minutes is the same length of time that the accessories remain "powered" when you turn off the engine but don't open the door (?). Maybe the A/C computer doesn't always know that it should come back on?

had the same problem

I had had the same problem and was trying to remember what I had done different lately. I had turned my auto lights off recently so I started turning the switch on and off and the AC(lights, fan .....) finally came back on. I think they replaced the light switch because it had a short but I'll try to dig up the paper work and let you know . 03 PSD Limited

your not alone

sorry no help here, but mine has done the same thing. only once so far, around 34k miles. the climate control system didn't come on, just showed the clock. it seemed to me that it defaulted to the defrost vent and heat. went to lunch and came out started the X and it's worked fine since.

i bought mine used so no telling how long or often it has occured.

My build date inside the driver door says 03/03, where did you get the day ? When it happens next time try turning the auto light switch on and off ... ?
Speaking of build date, have you had many problems with your 03-03 ? 38k

The build date on my excursion is 06/03. It has 23,000 on it. I also remembered that when one of the first times the a/c went out, i flipped the auto lights switch a few times and it came back on.

The 03/17/03 came off a sticker on the valve cover on the motor. I looked at the date in side the driver door and it is 03/03 . The only problem I have had is right after I got it in 10/03 is idle surge they reflashed the computer and it has been fine ever sense. Very happy with my X.

It could be that the high pressure cut out switch located on the filter dryer (cylindrical shape with two wires) switch is defective. That is the switch that closes the magnetic clutch to the compressor. Or it could be just plain lose wire, next time the compressor cutout wiggle the wires all along its lenght and see if the compressor will engage if not I suspect the switch. Also have the freon checked if there is enough freon in the system, low freon and too much will cut out the compressor clutch. James

There doesn't seam to be a problem with the compressor or freon level. The controls in the dash go black no lights , no temp readouts,no fan,no a/c and no heat. The fan for the rear heat and a/c will blow air but it is not cold on a/c or hot on heater. When the lights come back on everything works as normal. My clock is in the raido and it has always worked fine.

Interesting about production date(s). My X was built in Feb. 03. Could have been a bad batch of A/C computers in Feb - March 03? Had never heard about the headlight switch idea either. Unfortunately, I never complained about the problem while still under warranty. Now at 51K miles, I'll have to live with this one...
