91 f150 302 motor...had a dead battery today so went out and picked up a 850 amp battery...old one was 875 amps...truck started up BUT turned out alternator was putting out only 10 volts so back to the shop to pick up a alternator...the guy in this shop wasent very helpfull on what type of alt to get so i bought a 65 amp one..after installing it everything seems to be ok..turns out the stock old one was 75 amps..my question is in putting in a alternator 10 amps lower then what was there make any differance in keeping the battery charged and supplying power to stuff like a/c or ham radio..any thoughts......thanks
As far as your voltage is concerned, altenators have a regulator that constantly adjusts to keep the supply voltage at or around 12 to 14 volts.
you shouldnt have any problems with the amperage as with what franklin said as long as you are not running any high amp devices such as a high powered speaker amp etc. radios, cbs and cell phones all draw about half an amp so you should be ok. hope this helps.
If your truck is stock, except for the CB, I would not worry about it. The battery is big enough to absorb any temp. current draws. At idle, both the 65 and 75 amp probably put out the same amount of amps, you only hit the 65/75 output at high RPMs.
