i have a 94 ranger and i was wondering how i could make a heat shield for a cone filter that i am planning on getting. can i buy onee or can i just make my own? if some one macde their own can you eexplain it to me?
I've read about people using a plastic flower pot to cover the filter and some PVC pipe to get air from the radiator support area, were the original box picked up air.
I took a piece of cardboard and bent and cut it until it fit the hole that the stock airbox was. I then took that piece of cardboard and used it as a template to cut out some sheet metal to match the size and shape of the cardboard template. Sanded it down, painted it, and here's the result:
I did try that PVC pipe trick that Ken suggested...but I noticed no change and it looked rather stupid even though it was well hidden.

A rule of thumb regarding intake air temp is 10 degrees = 1hp so it is beneficial to isolate your filter from the hot underhood air and feed it with cooler outside air. To do this you must be sure that any box you construct is sealed from the engine compartment and has a large unrestricted input from the outside. There is no need to insulate the box or air tube since the velocity of the incoming air and the short distance it has to travel will limit any heat conductivity. You might want to adapt the stock airbox which has a sealed top to accept your new filter, and enlarge the input opening. Good luck.

I'm going to be working in a pipe shop this summer, if all goes right, I will go grab some scraps, weld them together and make a nice enclosure for mine, then make me a couple of brackets to mount it on, shouldn't be too hard. if you got a nice little piece of metal and cut a hole in it, it should be alright once you bend it, shouldn't be too complicated.
