Revving without a tach

Hi I have a 98 Ranger xl 2wdr with a 2.5 l. It did not come standard with a tach, and I am wondering if I have a rev limiter? The reason I want to know this is because I really am not sure where the redline could be on my engine, If I know that I have a rev limiter I can take it up until I hit it to get a better idea what I have to work with. Also, from what I hear the top of the powercurve of my engine is at about 5000 RPM's. Is it a good idea to shift around 4-5,000 then? Like I said I really can't tell what RPM I'm at when I shift, I just don't want to rev it too much and hurt the engine, but if I can rev it higher maybe I can get a little more power out of it. I would just install a tach, but I don't want to mess around with the computer and all that. Thanks

Your 98 2.5l is rated at 119hp@5000 rpm and 146lbs torque@3000rpm. So for max pulling performance use 2500-3500 rpm and 5000 rpm is your upper limit.

You will know when you get too high on the RPM's because that poor little engine will be screaming. It almost has a painful sound to it. If you wanted to install a tach it is very easy. We can walk you through it. They can be found cheap on eBay like mine.
