Idle with AC on

88 F150 4x4 6cyl. When I turn on my AC the tuck has a hard time idling and will die. As soon as the AC is turned off the idle is back to normal. This condition existed even when system was out of freon and compressor was not turning on. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Just for the heck of it, unplug the A/C compressor clutch connector, and try it all again. That will remove the compressor load from the engine, and if you still have trouble, and the clutch isn't stuck "ON", then I would think something electrical in A/C circuit causing some sort of weird problem.

Idle with AC on

I would try and find out if the idle speed motor is working. When the engine is cold you should have a fast idle speed for a few minutes after it starts and gradually decrease as it warms up. If this does not happen (idle speed stays about the same all the time) I would suspect the motor may be bad. If the idle speed motor is working the problem gets a little harder to figure out.
