Timing Question (Dumb)

OK don't yell at me. Here is my question. What should be or what is the equation to figure out the correct timing with my new cam?

I have been told since I have a new cam my initial timing will not be the same as stock.

I have timed the engine by ear. I know not the right way to do it, runs good, but I would like to do it correctly.

Thanks

If you have not changed the distributor use the factory specs.

The dizzy is a remanned stock one, with a crane cam XRi points conversion and a mallory ignition.

So use the stock timing. So need to tell my buddie is crazy.

Now I look stupid That's what I get for having a chevy guy as a friend.

Ignition timing has more to do with the length of the burn, than the duration of the valve opening. The valves shouild be closed on the compression stroke, when the ignition fires.
