I recently purchased an 83 150 with a 302 V8, edlebrock intake man. and edlebrock 4brl carb.. automatic trans OD the previous owner removed all the smog stuff. I just found out that timing is not done at the distrib.this is new to me. there is some sort of cam sensor that timing is done at. does anyone know where that is and how to time from that point. I am baffeled,Help!! Please! Thanks 1983 F150 302 auto OD short box flairside 83000 orig. miles
probably noone else will answer you on this, so ill try (its not in a chilton so everyone else will be confused).anyway who said you cant time an 83 302 at the dist.???? ive had a few and right now i have an 84 bronco and guess how i time it? at the dist.unless someone put in a cranktrigger magneto you should be able to time it normally.look around your harmonic damp. and see if you see a funny looking doodad with wires positioned on it(like a lawnmower)if you dont, time it normally and happy motoring.
I know it sounds weird, but right on the distributor it says the you cannot change the timing at the distributor and it is made so you cant, I removed the hold down bolt and there is a notch that the hold down bolt fits in so you cant turn it. I have never seen that kinda thing before. The cam sensor thing I found in the timing light instructions stating that some Ford models cannot be timed at the distributor and that it has to be done at the cam sensor. I could inlarge the notch on the hold down and then try and time it but I don't want to screw things up. What and where is that cam sensor? Thanks for the previous advice John
man, i dont know what to tell you then. ive never heard of it and ive done alot of mechanical work on fords. you sure its an 83 motor??????????????sounds like a newer motor. for example.where i live the ford boys take broncos and put 5.0 motors in them which takes alot of modifying(computer fuel inj., etc.)could someone have done this??
Unless its been butchered up, look down by the timing mark scale bracket. Is there some crankshaft pickup attached to, or by, the timing mark bracket? I think some of those back then had an external crank, not cam, sensor. There may have been a disk on the balancer with one tooth on it, for the sensor to pick up each time the crank went round. I think thats what mrpotty was talking about.
Thanks guys, I beleive it has the original motor in it, its just missing all the smog stuff, Oh! it was a california truck if that makes a Difference, I think they did different things to the trucks so they would pass the strict california emissions, so maybe thats why we have never seen this type of thing before.
