A New Toy
A New Toy
I've been wanting a hot rod to work on for a long time, and I finally got one. I am on a low budget, I'm not talking Shelby here but I did get a nice 77 Grand Prix. It's got a 403 with a turbo 400 tranny, buckets and console, power everything, and it is super clean and everything works. The owner got into a fender bender and I need to replace the driver's side front fender, the grill, and the front bumper. But the car is still driveable and very nice other than the body work - but I got a great deal on it because of that. Some people don't think of a 77 Grand Prix as a muscle car, but it's got the same powertrain of a Trans Am and in the past the same as a GTO. Plus they have great styling and cool interiors, especially with the buckets and floor shift.
Yeah yeah I know it's not a Ford, but I am not a Ford car guy. And I won't post anymore here about it, it's like announcing a new baby.
Of course I am keeping the Bronco. I do not plan to ever give it up. It is so dependable now and has been for over two years, between the many repairs I did not too long after I got it, and the preventive maintenance, I can count on the Bronco to be ready to go anytime, anywhere.

Just briefly - a 1977 Grand Prix is the last year of the big ones from Pontiac. They started to downsize them in 1978. They tend to get overlooked by people who focus on the GTO's and Trans Am's. But the Grand Prix, when properly equipped (and mine is) can be the equal of either one. Like I said, my engine and tranny is exactly the same as the top 1977 Trans Am. Grand Prixs also had excellent suspensions especially when they have the RTS. Inside they have really cool consoles and the overall design of the interior is very nice, especially with the buckets/consoles.
The plan for mine is to use some of the parts from a 77 Trans am to further the performance image of my Grand Prix. For example, I just spent $95 on a color matching Trans am steering wheel. I am also going to install a Trans
Am shaker in the hood, and the Trans Am exhaust tips. I think that it should have factory duals with the 403 motor, and it would sound awesome with a couple of Flowmasters on it. They also made some Grand Prixs in 76-77 with T-Tops and I plan to eventually put them in as well. They are not expensive if you can find a pair, I saw a nice pair go for ten bucks for a Grand Prix! The Trans Am T-Tops won't fit.
Many Grand Prixs are also fully loaded, again as mine is. Everything is power and it all works, including the AC. Then again, my Bronco is also fully loaded and I like that.
I'll get some pics up when I get the car, it runs fine but I don't have time to go to California and get it so I am having it transported.
Sounds like a pretty cool project. My dad had a 77 grand prix LJ when I was 14 it was really nice. Black, w burgundy leather interior power sunroof buckets seats and power everything. One of the nicest looking Pontiacs of the 70's.
