i have a 1996 f-150 with a 302 and im getting a code..i think it was p0401, EGR insufficient flow, how do you clean the EGR valve or do whatever has to be done for this code..i HATE emissions stuff!!
Yes you can clean the valve. Take the valve off and spray carb cleaner through it while manually opening it. This has got rid of the "insufficient flow" code more than once for me.
If that doesn't solve it you'll have to check vacuum lines, the sensor, etc. I believe with OBD-II, 1996's sense EGR flow a different way than before.
I was getting the same code on my 93 and it turned out to be bad ends in the hard vacuum lined feeding the EGR control solenoid. They were swollen and loose. I just replace the coupling ends with short lengths of vacuum line and all is well again.
I had the same exact problem and changed the egr with no help.
On the 1996 302, the egr position sensor is located and faces forward on the the drivers side of the throttle body on a bracket that I believe supports the throttle cables. It is a silver box with two rubber hoses going into the bottom of it and an electrical connector too. It takes a little patience with the screws as you should be carefull not to drop them cause it's in a somewhat tight spot. This fixed my persistent 401 codes.
I could only get the sensor from the Ford dealer and the new one doesn't look like the old one at all. Ford quit making it but have a replacement that the parts man said is fairly universal for any 302 no matter what it is in.
If you insist on removing the egr, be very carefull not to break the pipe going down to the intake. You have to remove the throttle body to get to it to replace it. Hope you figure it out!!!
