Air Pump?
Thanks for any input.

That would be a good indication that is the problem. Sometimes I have heard the pumps squeel on the belt because the intake filter (looks like a coffee can) is clogged. Check it first. Sometimes I have seen them squeel because the output hose/pipe is clogged. Check it too.
>Is there a way to
>check for sure?
What do you mean? Check for sure would be to replace the pump and see if the squeel stops. Not sure what you mean.
>how hard and expensive is
>it to replace this part?
Not too hard, the pump isn't cheap though. I don't have the price in front of me, maybe someone here has replaced one recently.
> Is it really needed?
Now here is where the rubber meets the road. Is it really needed? The air pump is ONLY for emissions purposes. At idle or high manifold vacuum situations, it directs fresh air into the exhaust to aid the catalytic converter in burning unburnt HC's. Since it is illeagal to disable emissions equipment, you must leave it alone or replace it. BUT if you did remove it and you kept the truck in tune, I bet you would pass most (not CA's or visual inspections) states emissions tests without a problem. Add a MSD 6A ignition system and i gaurantee it would pass.
