I am seeking information regarding the V-10, preferably later model years. I am gathering information so that if I choose to purchase a new F-250, I get the engine that is right for me. I am not looking for people to compare one engine to another. I can do that on my own, as long as I have facts regarding each engine. I have also posted in the 6.0 Diesel thread asking about the reliability, problems, and issues of that engine.
Although I have read of references to the V-10 forum, I have been unable to locate a forum dedicated to the V-10. That does seem odd since there are dedicated forums for each diesel engine. If I could locate that referenced forum, it may have all the information I would need to help make an informed decision. I am asking for real user input.
The '05 V-10 has been upgraded power wise and supposedly is a little more efficient. Average real-world mileage figures indicate about 12mpg based on what I have been able to gather on this website. Please share your experiences, both good and bad. I look forward to your help. Thanks!
The V-10 forum can be found under the Performance section. Ironic? I think not! Ha ha. Ok, ok diesel owners, I'm just playin'. I love the 6.0 (and 7.3) too, just not as much as my gasser.
My v10 is a 2000 so I can't comment on the late model v10's but mine rocks, so I can only assume the newer models are even better. (knock on wood). I've had absolutely zero issues with mine, except that MAF but that was my fault! Anyways, here's the link the v10 forum, lots of good info there:
Love both my 2000 v-10's, excursion is a highway cruiser, but if you really want to be impressed, drive my 35ft class a coach, loaded, slides and all, plenty of power to pull hills and cruise. so far the only disappointment is the sound of the exhaust.
Good Luck, R.
my 05 250 v10 is the best gas engined truck i have owned, mpg has been about 12.6 and it towed a 7500 lb boat plus trailer like it was nothing. has not had to make a dealer trip yet in 4000 miles. i love it.
I have a 04' F-350, V-10, SC, 4x4, 6-speed, DRW, w/4:30 L/S,,it has been a great truck, never been back to the dealer yet, over 17 k now,,pulls 2 different trailers,,push's a 9' Fisher plow,,love it,,weighs right about 8k, best mpg I have calculated so far is 11.35, and thats mostly rural driving and some short hightway driving, pretty sure if I took a trip and did 65 mph,,it would do around 14 or so.

PS. I traded in a 99' PSD, 9' dump for this truck,,the PSD was getting 11.5 mpg when I traded it. best I ever got with it was 13.1 mpg !
400lb lighter engine, 362HP, 455 Ftlbs torque, $510 option, mated to the 5R110 TorqShift and twisting against 4.30:1 rear gear out to 32.6" tires. On my second V10 after several diesels, a 7.3L on steroids being the best. Have two 6.0L PSD Hot Shot trucks. Prefer the easy lower cost maintenance of the gasser, it is much more quiet and hauls a 22,850 load up and over Colorado's tallest steepest grades with out a whimper. Best truck I have ever owned and would by another tomorrow morning if I could figure out how to drive two at once!
Come on down to the V10 forum, learn about BSEG, and let us convince you to get into the 10 Burning 4 Turning club!
Mine's an '03. Got 32000 on it now with no drivetrain problems at all. No noise, no oil loss, starts up on one crank every time. I've towed my trailer as heavy as 6500/7000lbs and even with my 3.73s it hauls it around with some serious authority.
Mileage stays bewteen 11 & 12 mpg city/hwy and a little over 14 for 100% highway driving at 65/70mph. Any type of towing drops it down to 9/10mpg.
Buy it, you'll like it. Go to the V10 forum and read back on some of the posts. Lots of useful info there along with a little nonsense and lots of grinning V10-crazed rebels waiting to answer your questions. If you want to now about all the grinning, test drive a 6.8L and find out for yourself!

Well I have owned 15 gas vehicles and 3 PSds over the last 38 years and my 05 V10 is the nicest vehicle I have ever owned. It is hard to believe how much better a pickup handles when you remove that extra 400 pounds up front. Wrenchtraveller
Jmbfin, I looked at the 6.0 vs V-10 also. I chose the 6.0 but I really looked hard at the V-10 and I know I would of been happy with it also. Especially the '05, they go to 3-valve per cylinder and this increases the horsepower. If I had bought the V-10 I was throwing a Banks exhaust on it. The boys in the V-10 forum right here on FTE were great, head on down there, read some older posts and ask questions, they will take great care of you. Welcome to FTE and stick around, the amount of knowledge and information here will amaze you...Deac
I really like my '05 SD V10. I ordered it so got just what I wanted with reg cab and 2 wheel drive. Have had it now for almost 2 months. 2075 miles on it and checked the ave. today and it is 13.93 mpg. About 3 times I've hit over 15 and a couple times a little over 12. I kinda think most people won't get this good for gas mileage as I drive mostly rural and with a light foot. Have not towed with it yet. Have a new 20ft car hauler that will get used a lot this summer. Will probably be happy with 9 or 10 towing the trailer which will be close to 7000 lb loaded. My old Chevy with 305 got about 10 towing trailer with a car on it and had to work hard on any kind of hill.
I have a 03 F250 with V10, 4.3 limited slip, Crew Cab. It is by far the best truck i have ever owned. A couple of weeks ago i put on a Magnaflow cat-back and a super-chips reprogrammer. WOW this combination really woke up the truck. I took it to a remote area and "opened her up" from a dead stop. I squeeled the tires in every gear. And this is with a limited slip.
The programmer is only running at the 87 octane setting at the moment, but i plan on trying out the higher settings. I am afraid i will love it even more and have to justify putting super-gas in, though to do when gas is over 2 buck a gallon.
My decision to get a v10 was based on the opinions of this site and 2 fellow firefighters that already bought them.
Shopping for the V-10. The 6.0 Diesel would "probably" be a fine choice. However, the uncertainty of it's reliability, higher maintainence costs, and only the possibility of 3-4 mpg better mileage leads me to believe I would feel more comfortable knowing the consistency of the V-10.
Now is the challenging task of locating a V-10 King Ranch 4X4 with every option. So far, closest is in Houston,TX, a short 6 hour dirve. Perhaps waiting for the '06's to hit the lots may be the best option. Time will tell. Thanks for all your input!!!! Very much appreciated.
I have a PSD currently and have owned a V10...like the other responders have said, the V10 is a great motor and would be fine for you. I would agree, the V10 handled better up front, seemed more responsive with a lighter front end. I think it sat higher too, but never really put a tape to either one to compare.
