Exclamation Self Changing Sparkplugs

Hello Fellow Ford Owners,

I have been a fan of this site for sometime now. Today I became a member. My 2001 F-250 , 5.4L V-8 spit a spark plug. The dealer states that it is a $3,000 dollar repair. I called Ford Customer Service and hit the wall. Since my vehicle is out of warranty there is nothing that can be done. They won't let me access the factory rep to present the case that these cylinder heads are improperly designed. They tell me that my only recourse is to write to Bill Ford, which I have done. In the meantime I am in the process of gathering as much information about this condition as possible. Any and all responses would be appreciated.

There are cheaper, reliable repairs out there and they have been posted on this site. So you need to do a search under your vehicle and or that engine. I'm surprised there isn't a class action lawsuit on this. I'm lucky as my 2001 is second generation and supposedly its not an issue.

It is "thought" that the new 9-thread design came about for the 2003 1/2 year model. Heads (2 valve) manufactured on or after November 14th 2002 have the 9-thread design, all others before have the 4-thread design.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the diference on this guy's web page:

http://home.comcast.net/~therazy/PIHeadSwapPage.html

For 2003 1/2 and 2004, the 2-valve 5.4L V8 and 6.8L V10, the Automatic Spark Plug Ejection System (ASPES) is no longer available. It was a nice feature that let the driver know when it became necessary to change the spark plug(s) (and the heads too...).
