My 3rd and overdrive gears slip and barley work. I thought that the tranny was bad but someone just told me that the bands could be worn out and might still be able to be adjusted. Its a 1989 302 with an overdrive automatic with 113,000 miles. Can these nuts be tighted to give me a short term fix until I buy a new tranny? If so, where are they and do I have to drop the whole thing or just the pan? Any info would be a major help.
Well, if you had a C series tranny there would be an adjustment to be made, however, in the AOD there isn't. Sorry! But!.. you can drop your pan change fluid + filter and inspect some probable causes.-
1st- thoroughly clean the valve body( after removing it of course!) this is about as easy as changing the filter, use a good clear mineral spirit.
2nd- price a quality shift improver kit, as now is the best time to install, usually $40-60.
3rd- get an inch pounds torque wrench and a Haynes techbook for ford trannys or equivalent.
OR- PUNT- take to a shop and BRING YOUR CHECK BOOK!!!, but aside from actually removing and then re-installing, an auto trans. is fairly easy to recondition-ie. seals- bands- etc. DON"T BE AFRAID!
