What Engine Control System do I have?
I bought a Chilton Manual for my '87 F150 four wheel drive, with a 300-L6. My engine has been running hot at times and then way cold. I was told to check the ECM. The ECM is fine. Then I was told that maybe the computer is failing. I did overhaul the engine and installed a slightly larger than stock cam. The cam is a CompCams 252 degree cam with .433 inches of lift and it said it was EFI compatible. Does this particular year have the EEC-IV system. Chilton manual isn't very clear on the '87 model 4.9 EFI. Does anyone know what engine management system '87 F150 with an EFI 4.9 have?

How do you if the temperature is accurate? Have you verified that the temperature sending unit is okay?

87 F150 has eec 4 , speed dnsity system which means you have a MAP sensor instead of a MAF sensor. Did you replace the thermostat? It could be sticking cocmmon cause to run hot one time and cool the next. Did you set the timing correctly? This will cause funny things to happen. Why don't you replace the t-stat, if not already done this is cheap and easy and then you can rule that out.Good Luck

Check your fan clutch, too. Look for goo in the vanes; mine went away awhile ago, and gave me warning syptoms something like those you're describing. It could also be a loose guage sensor connection. I doubt very much it is the ECM or cam.
