I was thinking of doing a quick and inexpensive exhaust freshen up. I want the stock sound (I'm probably the first to say this) but also want the looks of duals out the rear. So I came up with an idea. Putting a Y pipe after the muffler (2 inch in, 1.75 both pipes out) and then to 2.5 inch tips.
My question is would this work with the stock muffler? I'm just worried about messing up the flow. If it does then I'll just get a cheapo dynomax or something with a little better flow and do it to that.
I think you are insane for wanting to modify the exhaust while keeping a stock sound, but to each their own. Your plan should work without any problems. Although I do think it will make your truck sound no longer stock.
It was just a thought for a quick fix until I get the money for a magnaflow. The pipe after the muffler has about a 1/4 inch diamater hole in it and is rusting like you wouldn't believe. Right now when you start it up it has a drone from the hole and since I'm looking for a magnaflow, might as well get the back pipes set first.

Anyone know of anyplace to get a magnaflow for under 100 bucks?
I live in Wisconsin and the best price I can get on a full system installed with just aluminzed pipe and non-mandrel bends for a magnaflow is 375.
I've went or called every shop in a 25 mile radius. The best was 375. The muffler alone for shipping and care is over 100. Then tips I can get off of ebay for about 35 for two but the pipe and labor costs a lot. They charge you near 30 bucks a hour for labor. And they say for four hours so it's 120 just for them to be putting it on. Then another 125 or so for the tubing.
I hear lots of people say they get installed systems for under 250 but I can't even find one to go under 300.
Also, the best price I can get for the entire magnaflow duals kit for the ranger is 500. If anyone knows where I can get a big discount on that I'd really love to know.
I had my duel exhaust installed on my '90 (2.9) and my '97 (4.0) for around $175 each. That included the y-pipe, glasspack, tips and install labor. Not the loudest, or most free flowing system, but I can still wake the neighbors up in the morning. I had it done at Exhaust Pros in ND. I think they have stores in MN too, not sure if they have them in WI.
