E4OD Temps

Having rebuilt my tranny, I put on a Tru-cool cooler (the biggest one they have) and I have a B&M gauge on the line before the coolers. This is in a motorhome which is towing a minivan. On a 77deg day my gauge would only show temps around 160. Is that possible? 160 BEFORE the coolers? Seems too cool. Does it sound right or is my gauge shot?

Depending on how big the cooler is, you may have over cooled atf. Not necessarily bad, just not to spec.

My 94 F250 with E4OD and factory cooler(about 8 inches high, by 12 long by maybe 1 deep), temp probe after cooler towing an 8,000# trailer stays around 150-160 for about an hour of freeway driving during moderate weather. Then it settles around 180 or so unless I hit lots of hills or try to drive over 70 for a long time or head wind or hot weather.

So you might be seeing cool temps especially if the cooler is really large. From what I have heard and been told by several reputable shops, you want at least some heat in the ATF for proper operation. Too cold is not good, but I don't think I have heard it will cause damage. Hot is bad.

Most specs or magazine articles I have seen said you want to be above about 150 and below about 190, most of the time. You rarely want to see 220 and anything over 240 is cause for concern, the clock it ticking.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

No you should be ok. Start climbing hills and bucking a good head wind and it will rise.
