1994 2.3L with somewhat newly replaced transmission. The problem is intermittent and it usually happens in the morning when I'm trying to back out of the driveway. All the forward gears are fine, no problems engaging any of them, however sometimes I just can't seem to get reversed engaged. The shifter will not even go into position.
Is there something out of sync? Or is it a temperature issue? I drove it for about 3 miles one morning to the gas station and back. By the time I got it home and parked it the reversed gear engaged just fine.
Hows the fluid level, those tannies leak at the plugs.
Fluid level is fine. The new transmission is only two years old (if that) and it was a complete re-built from the factory (plugs and all). I tried putting it in 5th and then down into Rev. but still no luck. However, by the time I went to leave from work yesterday, it went into reverse with no problems. I still have no idea as to why and I'm not about to throw any more money at it, when that money could be used as a downpayment on a new one.
mine can be stubborn sometimes about that too, I go to stick it in reverse and it's like it's gated and won't let it down, i just release and press back in the clutch and it goes in, my first gear is getting like that too, fluid is fine, i think the tranny may be starting to wear out on mine, I don't think it's been touched and it will cross over 200k in the next few weeks.
Well, since the fluid level is correct as well as the fluid type (probably Mercon but would have to verify) I have to wonder if the pilot bearing is dragging a bit. Did you replace that little $8 part when the tranny was replaced and did you put a dab of grease on the section of the pilot shaft that engages with the bearing?

Yup, I did all that... New Transmission, clutch, disc, pilot and throwout bearings, master and slave cylinders. Im just wondering if it's a case of new parts vs. old parts?? Replace a glove box light that leads to a chain of events resulting in a new engine block.
