I have a 95 F150 4x4 Supercab with a 302 and when I go up a long grade approx 35 degrees angle, the truck seems to begin to slow down. By this point the truck is in second gear (auto) and it seems that if you try to give it more gas it wants to drop to first and the RPM's jump up and it dos'nt feel like your moving any faster. If you let off, it tends to slow down to easy. I dont think it has enough torque to get the job done. What kind of changes can be made to boost the torque without compromising the computer algarythims? If I do make changes, what changes would have to be made to the computer and who could do this for me. The truck has 355 Gears in it and 31 x 10.50 tires. I have considered changing the gears to 373 gears. How much difference will this make, if any? PLEASE HELP!!! FRUSTRATED, HOWEVER, A DIE HARD FORD MAN!!!!!!!!!
Yes, your truck would benefit with more power, but the good news is you have *many* options and affordable aftermarket parts available (unlike this 300 I6 owner!)
I'd concentrate on the engine breathing ability first. Get a good flowing exhaust first - 2.5" dual exhaust with good flowing mufflers. Next, get a good flowing air filter. These should help, but if you really want better power you need to look at a better flowing intake, headers, or even a cam.
Pick up a good catalog (Summit, PAW, or other) as well as some magazines. The 302 is written up frequently in magazines, so you can let others do the combo testing for you. Best of all, most of the 302 parts are emmissions/computer compatable.
I own a 95 bronco 351 , E4OD . I had 3.55 gears in my truck and new there was lots more torque available. I thouhgt about engine mods. Then figured when you modify the engie or trans you going to open a whole other can of worms. Rather than do anything to the engine Isteped up to 4.10 gears . This has made a HUGE difference ecspecially pulling a trailer and low end it also keeps the RPM's up when cruising so when you need more power its there rather then downshifting all the time like with the 3.55's. Gears would be the way to go you don't have to touch the engine and you have lots more torque. You will have to change the front gears too,if you go above 3.73 you will have to get a different carrier in the front. Go to drivetrain direct.com they have prices and info about gear changes. Good Luck
More Power and Torque mean alot of cash. I beefed up my friends '89F150 4x4 with a bigger cam, headers, cleaned up the heads, a chip, and taller gears. Not sure exactly what amount of cash he spent but it was worth it. We've even debated about intsalling a supercharger.
