I think I cooked my transmisson this weekend ('03 7.3L Auto 40'000m). We were out bush n a fast downhill section (loose gravel) and going quite hard, Knocking down to second manually to help slowing the truck often. The trans started to slip and on getting out to check found the trans oil running like a tap from under the tourqe converter(sp). Stopped for the night and filled the trans up with oil in the morning and gently drove out, only a slight leak and by the time I had driven home up the freeway there was no more leak and had used no oil. The truck is still under warrenty but I have some concerns, given that the truck is running 35'' muds on a 4'' lift, that they may say this has caused the leak. Has anyone else had this big leak that then fixed itself????
To save your tranny and your warranty you should go IMMEDIATLY to Ford and have that transmission serviced. If you got it that hot you've toasted the fluid and it needs to be changed NOW! The transmission may be still be fine with a fluid change.
The warranty should cover the overheating. It probably won't cover damages due to operating the vehicle with burnt transmission fluid. I've seen charts that give the life of transmission fluid at different operating temperatures. If you get much over 230°F (I'm sure you exceeded this by a large margin) you should change the fluid within a thousand miles or so.
i think that lift and those tires are going to hurt you at the dealer. my 250 4r100 just let lose with 48,000 2nd time and i dont beat it at all . put some stock tires on. oh yea glad i had the warenty
