Im planning on swapping a 460 crate engine in to my 1977 f-150 4wd pickup that currently has a 351M in it. . I know that I will have to change motor mounts the 460 will bolt up to the C6 bellhousing. But what will i have to change in side the belllhousing, such as torque converter, flywheel, starter.
You will need the correct flexplate (not flywheel) for the 460; the crate versions use an externally balanced flexplate specific to the 460. Ford recommends a particular Ford piece, or you can use a suitable aftermarket flexplate. The torque converter may bolt to the new flexplate, but as long as you are doing all the work, I'd replace it with one with a stall more suited to the particular engine. Make certain that the converter pilot is the proper diameter for your crank's pilot bore. The starter should bolt up fine; whether it will work adequately is another question.
When swapping the C6 onto the 460, you may find that you need to use more than one rear block plate in order to get the proper converter clearance. Occasionally as many as three are needed; depends on the converter. Not enough clearance means trashing the C6 front pump, and quite probably the crank thrust bearing as well.
