Hi i have a 300 6cyl, 1979 , anyone familiar with removing the distributer. I believe I have a bad o ring that needs to be replaced. Losing oil. Also does anyone know is there suppposed to be a gasket in between the distributer ant the block. Any info appreciated. Thanks..
You are losing oil from distributor? Haven't seen that. Anyway, to remove the distributor just remove the retaining bolt and plate. If you're really lucky the distributor will just slide out, but not likely. You'll probably have to pry and work it out. Make sure you mark the distributor good and if your truck is a stick, put it in nuetral so you don't rock it and get out of time. Have fun -
My daughters altima has a 120,000 on it and the bushing is bad and oil will fill up the dist and cause it to run rough, but on the altima, the dist is sideways and runs off one of the overhead cams. I have never heard of this happening on a six but it is possible.
I replaced my distributor about 13,000 miles ago (150,000clock). I have never had one leak though. I had to tap on it a little to get it out. If you can, before you take it out. Take the cap off and mark the rotor position on the main body of the distributor, so you can line it up when u put it back together. You should be able to line it up perfect and not have to time it. Just a little trick I did to keep me from getting a headache later.
