Engine ID

Is there a way to tell if the engine I have in my '87 F250 is the original?

Thanks to all who gave advice on differential work. I've now got my new limited-slip in, and it's working great. I appreciate the help.

The 8th digit of the VIN indicates engine size , but thats no indication whether its original or not unless an engine of a different size was used . What makes you think it may not be the original ?

I'm just curious and like to know what I'm working with. The guy I bought it from said he thought the engine had been replaced (he wasn't sure). I don't see any sign, though, that the one here has ever been pulled (no scuffed bolt heads, etc.). The numbers match for the engine type and year, so maybe he was wrong.
