I have a 1970 F100 with a 302 and a 2BBL carb. I recently found another from a salvage yard and rebuilt it. What tools do I need to set the mixture correctly? Plus when I drive and step on the gas there is no power, is maybe the timing off?
After getting motor up to temperature, you can adjust things. The fuel mixture screw(in front/bottom of carb) should be set at about 1 1/2 turns OUT for initial start. Then with motor idling turn each screw IN until motor starts to stutter, then back OUT about 1/4 turn. Do this to each screw, but they should both end up about the same number of turns OUT. After doing this the idle MAY be slightly higher than when started, so re-adjust as needed.
Re-confirm that the accel pump is working correctly. I have found that more than once it is sluggish to pump quick enough. This will leave a dead spot on acceleration. If you slowly accel, does it seem okay but when you step on it quick it stumbles? Make sure the linkage going to accel pump is free and working. This is the downfall of the Autolite, it uses a spring to work the accel pump. If the linkage is tight, the spring will not push it quick enough.
The timing may be an issue too, but if you have not messed with that yet, then I would check carb first.
So freighttrain, I only need to really turn the idle screws back a 1/4 of a turn each and it should be right on? Am I making this too difficult?
I did check my accelerator pump and found it was leaking. I replaced and found that the housing was actually warped. I put just a tiny bit of blue permatex around the edges, let it dry and it seemed to hold it. I think I may need to grind it down to level it back out. What do you think?
